How Islamic Prayer Times and Qibla Angles Are Calculated

In Islamic tradition, the five obligatory daily prayers (Salah) are defined by the physical position of the sun in the celestial sky relative to the observer's terrestrial coordinates. Because solar noon and twilight boundaries shift daily based on the Earth's axial tilt, precise mathematical formulas are required to compute daily timetables.

The University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi Calculation Method

Across the Indian subcontinent and Pakistan specifically, astronomical timings are computed under the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi methodology (Method 1):

  • Fajr (True Dawn): Commences when the sun's center is exactly 18.0 degrees below the eastern horizon (astronomical twilight).
  • Dhuhr (Midday): Commences when the sun transits the local celestial meridian (Zawal), plus a safety cushion of 1 to 2 minutes after zenith.
  • Asr (Afternoon): Calculated using the Hanafi juristic standard, where Asr begins when the shadow of any vertical object equals twice the length of the object plus its noontime shadow (Mithlayn / 2x shadow).
  • Maghrib (Sunset): Begins immediately when the entire solar disc disappears below the western horizon.
  • Isha (Nightfall): Commences when solar twilight completely fades, defined as the sun descending 18.0 degrees below the western horizon.

Mathematical Trigonometry for Qibla Direction

The Qibla is the direction facing the Holy Kaaba in Makkah al-Mukarramah (coordinates: 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). Determining the shortest geodesic heading along the Earth's oblate spheroid requires the forward great-circle bearing equation:

θ = atan2( sin(Δλ) · cos(φ₂), cos(φ₁) · sin(φ₂) − sin(φ₁) · cos(φ₂) · cos(Δλ) )

Where $\phi_1, \lambda_1$ represent the user's latitude and longitude, and $\phi_2, \lambda_2$ represent Makkah's coordinates. From Pakistan, the Qibla bearing generally points West-Southwest (between 252° and 266° clockwise from true geographic North).

Why does Asr time differ between apps?
The discrepancy is caused by the juristic school setting (Fiqh). The Hanafi school (predominant in Pakistan) calculates Asr at shadow factor 2, whereas Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools calculate Asr when shadow length equals 1.
Does device metal interfere with Qibla compasses?
Yes. Hardware magnetometer compasses inside smartphones are easily distorted by nearby structural rebar, laptop magnets, or electrical wiring. For maximum precision, calibrate your phone by moving it in a figure-eight pattern away from magnetic interference.
